Throughout the year 2021, the castle will make the "budding princesses and knights" dream.

Once upon a time
.... in a faraway land, a kingdom, a castle, princesses, knights.... History still does not tell us if these princesses made themselves a thousand times more beautiful and if these knights believe themselves a hundred times more courageous. Thus populated by kings, queens, princes, knights and princesses, the Middle Ages still makes us dream. Young princesses in sumptuous robes or brave knights armed with their fearsome sword, myths or realities?

Then, once upon a time...at the castle of Saint Mesmin, there was the desire to make a great historical leap in the education of children to cross the ages of their lives to the Middle Ages: early childhood, then the age of reason and finally the age of responsibilities. A way of telling the story of medieval youth under the gaze of a noble child living in the castle!

Thomas Guicheteau is a professional juggler. Declining the juggling in all its forms, he proposes himself as a true "joglar" of the castles to stage "Little Tom, Juggler with two balls", number mixing skill and humor. Thus, he takes advantage of what Guiraut de Calençon troubadour of the early thirteenth century advised the juggler: "Know how to throw small apples in the air and catch them on knives ...".
In the form of shows and initiation to whoever wants to hear it with juggling balls, rings, swords or clubs, Petit Tom will know how to conquer everyone's heart.

Céline Cossard's stories from "La fabrique des échos" have the humour, wonder and wisdom of the elders as their companions. She takes the audience into another world, without fuss or artifice. Her playing is full of nuances. Mischievous or disturbing, moving or funny, she explores registers without limits.
She listens to stories from all over the world, swallows them and carries them away, well protected in small bags? She twirls between stories, stops there to tell the essence of the tale, sometimes mixing music, sound effects, puppets or shadow theater. On the program, the legend of a wonderful love, the young girl in the forest, the little frog, bluebeard and many others...

The company " Théâtre Billenbois ", presents a rare reconstitution, in the spirit of the Middle Ages, of a shoulder castelet or carried theater. Like a man-band, the troubadour supported by his castelet will perform his show "Manants et beaux seigneurs" (Manants and beautiful lords), based on the jokes and fabliaux of the medieval repertoire. These quick and funny little texts were very close to the preoccupations of the people of the Middle Ages, sometimes naughty and contentious. These fabliaux strongly displeased the authorities. This is why the troubadours and showmen carried their castelets on their shoulders, ready to flee as soon as the provostry appeared...

Discover, during a summer visit, the daily life of children in the Middle Ages with three lively areas: physical education with a training competition, moral education with daily occupations and intellectual education around knowledge (science, writing, arts).

-    A training course in the farmyard
Here it's time for physical education, the captain takes care of it... Nothing like good exercises for the pages and squires: quintaine, fencing, archery and collective games. Last but not least, strategy, strength and agility are required to hope one day to become a knight or knightess.

-    The whole world of the daily life of the child in the home
Here it is time for moral education, the nanny deals with it. No time to lose, from jumping out of bed in the morning to going to bed at night, the days are full. Between getting dressed, taking care of one's body, knowing how to sit at the table, keeping the fire going or playing, the frantic rhythm leaves no time to get bored.
-    Shh! Silence we study...in the chapel...
Here it is the time of intellectual education, the tutor takes care of it. Learning, reading, writing, counting and creating are obviously given pride of place... From calligraphy to ornate letters, through the science of coats of arms and construction techniques, it is home schooling. A clever mix of playful practice for a well-learned lesson!

But also, in the off-season, other animations to complete the multiple facets of life at the castle of the "Budding princesses and knights".

"The origins of falconry go back nearly 4000 years, it has touched every continent and almost every civilization. In France, it reached its peak in the Middle Ages " ... This is how the presentation of birds of prey by “Vol en Scène”, based in Chauvigny (86), began. Rhythmic, instructive and playful at the same time, the public will enjoy the beauty and variety of the birds which will evolve freely above their heads, while appreciating the pedagogical commentary of the falconer.

Before or after the flights of the birds of prey, the public will be able to admire the birds which will be presented in a space adapted to children who will be able to approach them and have their pictures taken.

The weapons Master Hoël the Jangler initiates the children to art to play war and gives them "riding lesson" with his squires tournament.

The children relive the epic of the great tournaments of the Middle Ages: The stakes are sometimes courteous: one fights for a beautiful princess or her crown of flowers or for money. In addition to military training, it is a chance to show his value and for the best fighters to enrich themselves, thanks to the weapons of the defeated knights and the ransoms poured by the prisoners. Also, to impress the gallery, made way for prowess in the barnyard. At the end of the competition, the participant will be declared the winner by the herald and will receive a symbolic reward from the hands of the lady.

Dame Mélissande, the Trobaïritz becomes the space of a weekend tutor at the castle. At the request of the local lord, she is in charge of the sensory education of the children to open them up to the joys of music and dance. And for that, she has a method! For the rhythm, she checks if the children know how to count (at least up to 4...), in order to give them percussions. For singing, she checks their learning of reading. Finally, for the final, she initiates them to the first basic steps and choreography, all accompanied by the sound of her oboe. And everyone is invited to join the young dancers and singers. Let the show begin!

Without forgetting that Dame Mélissande always moves around with her instrumentarium (winds, strings and percussion), scores and song lyrics, just to extend the show.

Pascal Carbon alias " Jehan Sérien ", based in Lorgues (83) is a highly medieval, unusual and timeless character who will make you travel in time. In the castles where Jehan Sérien officiates, it is a dive into space and time. Through his chivalrous tales, his interventions will be sprinkled with authenticity, humor, tenderness and a touch of madness.  Jehan Sérien, this funny little man, during his tales, does not hesitate with all his cheek and his jesters to dialogue with the public. So come and listen to the valiant knight of the square table alias "Lancelot du seau" and his dear steed Rossinante.

After the ardour of the knight without little and without reproach, settle down near the table and its trestles and let the show begin! With the company " Les Tire-ficelles " based in La Chapelle Villars (42), Lucarius and Lothaire will talk about the world of medieval puppets. These two joyful companions, story sculptors and wood weavers will explore medieval puppetry, from the making to the manipulation. Sometimes behind their workbench, sometimes behind their castelet, often on the roads, it will be a real discovery not to be missed around these creators of small characters ... all dressed in threads!

La Taillandière d'Habits of Lune d'Ambre Dame Gyselette knows better than anyone else that clothes make the man or even the child. So, as soon as they walk and are clean, children in the Middle Ages are dressed with a few details as "little grown-ups". Throughout this medieval period the costume knows an evolution as well in the silhouette, as in the fabrics, the contributions of fabrics, and the dyes as well as in the clothing habits related to the morals and the Religion. The "fashion" thus does not date from yesterday and the trade of tailor of clothes and its uses are an open door on the medieval society, the conveniences on the appearance of the good people, small or large. In a decor recreated from a tailor's workshop in the Middle Ages, fabrics, tools, templates, toises, dressed mannequins, children's costumes, headdresses and hats come to life.

With "De tours en détours", the panoply of princesses and knights will be completed with wooden buttons turned by Jean-Pierre and embellished with multicolored braids fashioned by Dame Marie-Jeanne, so as to approach learning and companionship from the earliest childhood.

Present for several millennia and particularly in the Middle Ages, the ferret is an intriguing animal. It was used to hunt rabbits, but also to destroy attics and boats in the Middle Ages. It was also found as a pet among the nobility and made the happiness of princesses and knights.

The members of the company "Les Furets de l'Ouest" present their ferrets in wooden parks and inform the public about their history, their way of life in the Middle Ages, their needs and fight against the prejudices they are regularly victims of.

The term fencing in the Middle Ages covered not only the handling of the medieval sword, but also a whole range of medieval martial arts which were often organized into complete systems of armed defense (long sword, sword and bocle, dagger, spear, shield of judicial duel, etc.) and forms of hand-to-hand combat. The fencing becomes, in addition to its military aspect, an occupation for the nobility. It is thus that the tournaments were created. The French school of fencing is officially born in 1567, year or Charles IX authorizes the creation of the Academy of the Masters of Arms.

With "Spatha", collective of artists of the spectacle, actors but fencers above all, it will be proposed workshops of initiation to the historical fencing interspersed with fights choreographed according to the treaties of the time.

An online shop, with free access, with products of medieval inspiration.
A children's play area.

Smell of sulfur, cobwebs, imaginary creatures and mystical incantations, by deciding to free themselves from the medieval daily life, the company "La confrérie facétieuse"  will propose an animation on the theme of the school of magic.

This school of Magic, is opened, in fact, since a long time, but it was in sleep. Some teachers wished to reopen it. This is why, it is question of recruitment of small pupils, to know if they are apt to follow a magical schooling!

In the spirit of Harry Potter, the Christmas of Scrooge (drawee of the news of Charles Dickens) the atmosphere will be inspired by a universe of the end of the 19th century, a bit fantastic and magical.

Between school of sorcerer's apprentices and school of magic, facetious teachers of the Confrérie facétieuse, a little extravagant, will give lessons to potions and learning the basics of magic wands, without forgetting the discovery of the shop with candies, copiously garnished. The confectionery is open to sorcerer apprentices, and to their parents, naturelly!
